No, you have explained the problem well but I think this is more a windows
issue than a samba problem as I remember having the same problem a while ago
when I had only windows servers. The solution was to make a local user (with
the same username) on the system and get windows to use the same profile for
both users. Here is a link how to do that:

Although the article mentions windows 2000 this works on XP as well. I
actually am in the process of setting this up on desktops as well as we are
in the process of moving to a new location and it will be a few days before
I can get the entire network working again so this way everyone can login to
their local machine and use any data on that while the servers are down.
