I'll give the firewall trick a shot next time the connection goes slow, but I don't hold out much hope. Anyway, I think I'll let this thread drop now. Wireshark conclusively proved that the server was responding to requests in good time. The issue is definitely client side and it keeps randomly fixing itself after a while.
