Have you got a backup of the tdb files?
I had a lot of problems to upgrade to the etch (samba 3.0.24) from samba sarge (3.0.14): http://groups.google.com/group/linux.samba/browse_thread/thread/c896d5ea25a72341/5183303468c3a0be?lnk=gst&q=etch+alessandro&rnum=1#5183303468c3a0be the tdb backup files was the only way to get samba works again I'm continuing to try the upgrade, last week end I tried the 2.0.25a compiling it from source, but I had the same problems.
