Not certain. Are there any masks set in your smb.conf? If you create a new file within Excel, what are the permissions on it? I've just tested this myself, and cannot recreate the problem. I can copy in an Excel file, edit it (WinXP SP2), and save it, and I get the correct ACLs on the server.
