In any case, HP will not support tdbsam (I'm using CIFS/9000, but this question was relevant to Samba in any case) as the recommendation from Samba Team is not to use it for over 250 users. Oddly enough, they did not say that they wouldn't support smbpasswd. In any case, I'm hoping that a serious trim on that file will give me the breathing room I need to look at LDAP.
