Yes, I really need winbind.  I'm trying to create a single sign-on system that 
will allow both Linux and Windows clients to authenticate to a samba domain 
controller.  It's my understanding that winbind is necessary for getting Linux 
clients to work with an NT-style domain controller.
Your system apparently does not incorporate Linux clients and so you don't need 
to set up winbind.

A more important question is why should you turn off winbind? I've receive suggestions to turn it off, but why shouldn't it work? Is it broken in Samba (some version)?
