I seem to have solved the problem. While I had the 'wins' entry in /etc/nsswitch.conf of the samba machine, winbind wasn't installed, so it wasn't able to do a netbios lookup of the client machine. Since I fixed this problem, the 'not responding' problem didn't occur anymore.
