Title: RE: [sambar] tweaks {09}

Rodney,

That is correct - the Sambar proxy is not a caching proxy.  If you want to use caching, you'll need to another solution in place of Sambar's proxy.  There are a lot of caching proxies out there to choose from - some are free, some are not.  I am using Ositis' WinProxy (commercial software) simply because I already owned the product previous to having a dedicated WAN connection to the 'Net.  If you want to stick to something free, you might look at something like DeleGate (www.delegate.org) which runs on Windows, Unix, and OS/2.

Protocols Supported by DeleGate

Application protocols supported by DeleGate
- FTP (*proxy+origin, cache, mount)
- Gopher (*proxy, cache)
- HTTP (*proxy+origin, cache, gateway(FTP,Gopher,NNTP,Wais), mount)
- NNTP (proxy+origin, cache, gateway(POP), mount, MIME)
- POP (*proxy, gateway(NNTP), mount, MIME)
- SMTP (*proxy, gateway(NNTP), MIME)
- IMAP (*proxy)
- Telnet (*proxy, X-Window)
- Wais (proxy)
- LDAP (*proxy)
- LPR (proxy, gateway(FTP))
- X-Window (proxy)
- CU-SeeMe (proxy)
- ICP (proxy, origin)

+ *proxy -- forward to arbitrary destination servers
+ proxy -- bound to specified destination servers
+ origin -- work as an origin server
+ mount -- merge and alias multiple servers into a single server view
  + gateway(protocols) -- gatewaying to/from the protocols
  + MIME -- MIME header/body encoding/decoding

Circuit level proxy supported by DeleGate
- Socks/V4/V5
- VSAP (Virtual Socket Association Protocol)
- Any protocol on a single TCP/IP connection (tcprelay)
- Any protocol on UDP/IP (udprelay)

Authentication / Secure transport protocol supported by DeleGate
- SSL (using SSLeay)
- Ident

Umm,  I just read the Sambar Doc's on proxy and it said it does not "cache". It has not caching engine.  Suggestions?

> Sure, if the file is in your proxy cache already, it's like having the
file on your local hard disk available immediately. You won't see the delays in the download that you normally get (during the download) when you go to MS Windows Update. The problem is that you can't really control what you keep in the proxy itself. It's a FIFO system whereby a file only lives in the proxy for a certain period of time. This can be very good when Microsoft issues a new critical update and if you have dial-up users (or Networked LAN

users) who all want the update within a short period of time. The downfall is that if a site is updated and you have the older version proxied that there is the worry that you present the older version of the webpage or file to the caller. It's similiar to looking something up on google then clicking on a hot link to the file versus clicking on the cached version of the same link. Some proxied systems have smarts in regard to this taking a look at the file to see if there are changes and if so replacing the file in the cache or proxy.
