If excessive logging is your question and how to tune it down some then you maybe 
looking in the wrong place. You mentioned on your item b) that your using http.... 
Maybe what your looking for is to filter down some of the logging for your http 
request... Check your config.ini file for a parameter "Don't Log IPs = " under the 
[HTTP] section.. From here you can specify your internal IP addresses not to log for 
ie; 

Don't Log IPs = 192.168.* 10.33.*
