Wow thanks, James. Saw a couple of things in it I may be able to use. The main difference is that the script I'm using uses the Net::DNS module which talks to the the server and doesn't write to any file on its own which seems your approach. SDNS reloads the zone file on its own as soon as it sees a change and that happens real fast. Thanks again..
