There seems to be nothing about scanning on Linux that is not SANE. Some scanners will never have SANE support.
I may well get flamed for this but so be it. I have put together a LAN App that runs on Linux and supports the following scanners via a web interface. - ION AirCopy - ION AirCopy E-Post Edition - Halo Magic Scanner - Mustek iScan Air / S400W - Century CPS-A4WF - Transcription Patri Kun A4 Wi-Fi Portable Scanner - 転写パットリくん A4 Wi-Fiポータブルスキャナー This makes one of these wireless portable battery opeated scanners now network compatible and Linux copatible by way of a Linux host, and gets past the compatibility issues with iOS (and OSX?), because you only need a web browser to use it.
