Thank you Rolf, Olaf & Steve! When I got home I built Sane from https://gitlab.com/sane-project/backends.git
The build went successfully after a bit: $ ./configure --prefix=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var -- BACKENDS="pixma test" $ make $ sudo make install $ sudo scanimage -V scanimage (sane-backends) 1.0.28-361-g1e2f64dc; backend version 1.0.28 $ sudo scanimage -L No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the....... $ sudo sane-find-scanner found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x27fe [MF642C/643C/644C]) at libusb:002:005 /etc/sane.d/pixma.conf is completely commented out for now. So find-scanner *could* see the scanner and identify the driver, but scanimage -L could not find it. Then I tried to use Rolf's PPA since I am running Ubuntu 18.04 (but I have to admit I am less familiar with how to use do this)... $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rolfbensch/sane-git $ sudo apt-get update This next command took me a while to figure out. It is probably obvious to everyone else, but not to me. $ sudo apt install libsane-common $ sudo scanimage -L device `pixma:04A927FE_f4a997c93d62' is a CANON Canon i-SENSYS MF640 Series multi-function peripheral Success! Thank you so much! I will start testing the various resolutions and post my results. -Kip On Thu, Sep 12, 2019 at 3:20 PM Rolf Bensch <r...@bensch-online.de> wrote: > Hi Kip, > > As Olaf mentioned before, your scanner is implemented in stable SANE > version 1.0.28 (http://www.sane-project.org/sane-backends.html#S-PIXMA), > but not tested yet. > > If you're using Ubuntu or an Ubuntu clone, you can use my ppa to update > SANE: https://launchpad.net/~rolfbensch/+archive/ubuntu/sane-git . > > If you have another Linux OS, please install SANE as described in > INSTALL.linux (http://www.sane-project.org/docs.html). > > If your scanner can be found by SANE, please test scanning all dpi > resolutions and the document feeder with single/multiple pages, single side > and duplex.
