Hi,
I would prefer some kind of backend-to-frontend notification mechanism (pub-sub?) over polling but it should be made part of the SANE Standard so that all frontends can benefit from it.
My two cents: there is a need for two kinds of asynchronous notifications, that can come from backend: 1) notifications, related to the particular device (button press, for example)
2) notifications, related to the backend itself (hotplug events).
