Perhaps you could update your version to 1.0.31 of SANE by adding the new PPA:

I went there and it said:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sane-project/sane-release
sudo apt-get update
What it Didn't say (and it took me several hours to find out) is that you then
have to say
sudo apt-get install libsane=1.0.31
after which it seems to have worked (well, I have scanned the same document 6
times without problem). Now to get the gamma correction sorted out - but that
can wait till tomorrow.
