Still not working, but I did find the source of the bus lockups that were requiring a reboot per scan attempt, even for previews.
The usb stuff on this TYAN Trinity 100 (S1590) mobo are apparently pure caca when attempting to move data in scanner sized amounts, I moved the scanner to the new box, along with all the sources and built it for that firestarter, the second machine in the sig. I've now run 4 scans at up to 300dpi without any lockups so I believe thats fixed.. But the scans are trashed, the only actual data seems to be in the red channel, and its not 'dc restored'. The lamp isn't given near enough time to warm up before stopping on the calibrate strip, which it may be missing, but I've no way to tell. I suspect the next problem is to ask all on this list if they know what kind of a ccd assembly is in this Epson 1250U. I've not opened it up, I read a horror story about someone who did and lost all the focus adjustments because of it. It also isn't doing the lamp on/off correctly, and if its on from a previous scan, its shut off again for a 10 second portion of the calibrate routine and only comes back on about 2 or 3 seconds before it steps to the scan start position and begins the scan. This was using the tar.gz's of backends-1.0.7beta2, frontends-1.0.7beta2, and xsane-0.84.
