I stored the location in the .conf file, so you can either set it as implicitly per-user (with ~/.sane/blah, the default) or machine-wide. Then you have to also account for read-only-ness, in case the sysadmin would like to calibrate once and then not allow it to be changed (for some strange reason). Since you're working on the USB version of the "same" scanner I guess we could have it somewhat consistant - but feel free to do it a different way - I'm open to suggestions.
