You should try to disable the "Quality calibration" option in xsane (or xscanimage). In xsane you have to open the standard option window first. With the newest release of the snapscan backend (snapscan-20011008, available from http://sourceforge.net/projects/snapscan) this problem should be fixed. Quality calibration is disabled for scanners that don't support it. Regards, Oliver
