I tried building sane on OS X and sane-backends fails here:

(cd .libs && rm -f libsane-bh.la && ln -s ../libsane-bh.la
libsane-bh.la)
~/src/sane-backends-1.0.7/backend/.libs
cc -c -g -O2 -W -Wall -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I../include
-I../include -D_GNU_SOURCE
-DPATH_SANE_CONFIG_DIR=/usr/local/etc/sane.d
-DPATH_SANE_DATA_DIR=/usr/local/share -DV_MAJOR=1 -DV_MINOR=0
-DBACKEND_NAME=canon -DLIBDIR=/usr/local/lib/sane canon.c -o canon.o

I'll try frontends as well: I hadn't seen any mention of OS X so
far, so stop me if this is already resolved.
