Try http://www.kirchgessner.net/sanehpfaq.html That, plus the normal SANE doco, got me out of the hole with my HP USB Scanjet. I've since upgraded to Debian, but some months ago I was on Mandrake, and had a bit of a struggle getting the scanner to go. Seems the key is putting the right stuff into the hp.conf file.
