Indeed, the biggest problem is that the replacement adaptor sounds as if it is unregulated. While the original SMPS would not have fantastic regulation, it would be much better than an unregulated device. Try again with a regulated power supply, that can supply at least 25% more current than the scanner is rated at, and ideally 50% JAB. -- Jonathan A.
