Every now and then, scanning a resized preview caused a frozen xsane at about 95% scan. Did you try xscanimage? If you run into problems there, then it will be most likely a problem of the backend, if you don't have the problems with xscanimage, xsane seems to have a problem. I didn't try it myself.
