I found that when I edit gimptool, that is not enough; I had to edit the pc file as well to make it work. I didn't try with only the pc file edited, and not gimptool. It's running fine for me; Slackware 9.1, just installed the new gimp and xsane from source, no problems at all (except the occasional stubborness of my old skool parallel port Epson GT 6000, and that I need saned to be run as root in debug mode; but that's not xsane's problem).
