Henning, Well, you were correct. It was an outdated backend. I installed the latest sane backend and all is well and scanning. Finally! You'll not be getting any more scanner questions from me.:-) (at least for now) The answer was so simple, I'm embarassed that I didn't see it staring me in the face. Thanks for all your help.
