        Hello,

        maybe there are several instances of dll.conf on your system, and the 
one
used by scanimage may have umax_pp commented out. Also, 'umax_pp -p -t 1' does
direct hardware access, while the backend is configured by default to use ppdev 
character device. You can change this by editing umax_pp.conf and change the 
'port' 
option to 'port 0x378', if 0x378 is really your parport address.
