Ah, I see ... I thought my scanner was just getting old, since I was getting some stripes too. Turning on Quality Calibration in XSane removed the stripes (Mustek BearPaw 1200 CU). A new lease of life for it has just begun! That just goes to show how useful (albeit bandwidth and time consuming) lurking on mailing lists can be.
