The technique I use to develop new backends is to use scanimage, linked staticly only with my backend, and everything compiled with -g3. It doesn't take long to compile/link; I don't have to install anything and I know it's using the correct code. And if it crashes, I get a nice core I can analyze with gdb. Frank.
