"checkinstall" is not part of sane-backends. If it's this checkinstall you are talking about: http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/ They are talking about a compromised server in February (without any consequences). > and my whole box went crazy. windows > started popping up, then all my gnome icons were X'ed out. finally i > can not login in it says Cannot cd to "/home/jdodson" I cant login > with any other user. I downloaded sane via your website, WTF kind of > software is this? Some sort of trojan? Be careful with such accusations. > it was the sanebackend 1.0.15 from here: > ftp://ftp.sane-project.org/pub/sane/sane-backends-1.0.15/ Just to be sure I checked the md5sum of sane-backends-1.0.15.tar.gz from above mentioned server and it's correct. Also the file is identical to the local copy I have on my computer. And I don't have any problems installing (and using) it. > I am using an old laptop because all I can do it go into single user > mode on my ubuntu machine, a little help here as you caused the issue > in the first place? Have you used any options to configure? Maybe your hard disc died just when you installed sane? Bye, Henning
