Never mind, I figured it out already. :) I realised I also needed files from iscan-plugin-gt-x750-1.0.0-1.c2.i386.rpm that were not included in the iscan source package - it still didn't work, but when I ditched the epkowa that came with Debian and used the one from avasys directly, it worked fine.
