well, you can make it possible to scan as a non-root user by adjusting the permissions on the usb device file. unfortunately, this file gets recreated everytime the machine or the scanner reboots, so it is not enough to change the perms directly. you must do some sort of hotplug or udev (or devfs or ... :) modifications. try looking at README.linux in the sane source for more info... allan -- "The truth is an offense, but not a sin"
