I had similar problems with a UMAX2200SU using the USB interface and sane. When using xsane I found that there were many usb control messag timeout errors in the /var/log/messages. Eventually discovered that I can scan reasonably well using the scanner front end built into OpenOffice Writer 2.2 and have used that since.
