I thought about implementing such a feature in the hs2p (Ricoh) backend driver, but didn't have sufficient need at the time to do it. Some of the newer scanners like the IS760 can scan up to 2M so long as the entire scan (WxHxResolutionxDepth) fits in the scanner's memory.
