Looking at the gzip'ed log, you are experiencing the same problem as discussed in this thread: http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/sane-devel/2010-December/027757.html The fix for the initial problem in that thread is responsible for the cancellation you are experiencing. You can try reverting the patch[1], hack up a model specific work-around as suggested in [2] or try the epkowa backend that comes with Image Scan! for Linux (available via my employer's website[3]).
