Thanks, but it seems uninstallable. (below)  I used the Ubuntu deb line in my 
sources.list and tried every release back to Karmic, and same error.  

I've fussed with this kind of problem before using Aptitude, and broke my 
package managment system.  

gscan2pdf is available in Debian Sid, but when I turn off testing and on 
unstable in sources.list, it wants to upgrade a number of other libraries to 
support gscan2pdf, which I'm afraid will break my system when I set it back to 
testing.

Don't know what to do.
