i tested the oj 8600 about a year ago. when the adf option was selected, you had to use the -batch=n option and give it the number of pages. at that time, the hplip backend required batch mode with the adf.
if you wanted to scan three sheets in different steps, you could not. the printer was going to pull all the sheets in the tray through the scanner even if you only wanted one sheet at a time. again, this was a year ago, the hplip backend may be different today. i didn't want to rewrite a whole pile of scripts for these changes, so found a supply of older aio's.
