As at 24th April 2015, the Canon Pixma MG5600 series is reported as untested.

I built and installed sane-backends from git repository as at 20150424 (commit f6896e0de481fad5c63bf7ffc271aca89b9cbb01) and successfully performed scanning via USB connection for a Canon Pixma MG5650 on Ubuntu Linux.

Operating system: Ubuntu 14.04, Linux 3.13.0-49-generic, x86_64

sane-backends built with:
./configure --disable-latex BACKENDS="pixma"
(had to disable latex to avoid 'failed to make ptmr7t.tfm' as per http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/error-building-sane-4175490985/ )

libusb version 0.1.12

Tested scanner by installing 'simple scan' application on Ubuntu. Previously, using the sane-backends debian package from the Ubuntu repositories (sane-backends 1.0.23-3ubuntu3.1), 'simple-scan' did not detect the scanner. After building sane-backends, simple-scan detected scanner as 'CANON Canon PIXMA MG5600 Series'. Successfully scanned images at 150dpi grayscale and 300dpi, 600dpi and 1200 dpi color.
