Thank you Michael for your reply. around the same time I posted my email,
someone informed me about the trim feature of ImageMagick. and it seems to
do the job based on my brief testing. but, I would rather not have to do
such an operation.

in Windows, I can put in variously sized papers into the scanner feed tray,
and it'll automatically output matching page sizes. I do not have to do
anything else.
I wish Linux would be as simple as my windows experience in this particular
case.
