Things to check.
try this in terminal
SANE_DEBUG_HPAIO=100 scanimage -L
I get the following lines showing that sane is actually running hpaio
[hpaio] sane_hpaio_init(): scan/sane/hpaio.c 338
[hpaio] sane_hpaio_get_devices(local=0): scan/sane/hpaio.c 357
If you don't get any lines starting [hpaio], Is hpaio uncommented in
dll.conf?

I show hpaio in the /usr/lib/sane directory as well, but not hplip.
How do I know if that is installed for sane? It is all over the place
elsewhere on this machine.

Thanks, yes the hplip project lists the Envy 4500, but I'm pretty sure

As far as I can tell, this require the hp5590 driver, which appears to
be installed on my machine:

And the dll.conf has net and hp both uncommented.
What am I missing?
