While I have not tested it yet, it turns out that this $thing has a web page based control, so I added it to my /etc/hosts, and now I can see it at scanner.coyote.den, or just scanner, the alias. Apparently I can do anything I can do from its control panel. I had already set it up for networking, giving it a local address, netmask, gateway and dns server(my router, it forwards all dns requests it gets to the ISP supplied server addresses) and I setup the sntp to keep the clock somewhere near the right time. I've never tried to run a scanner from a web page, and it doesn't seem to have the options xsane does, like a preview scan & then adjust the area to scan only what one wants. So IMO this is going to be a clumsy way to run it. It does have size controls from 4x6 up to ledger (11x17), and the printer can also do that too. I would much rather be able to use it with xsane but despite the installation of a pile of software from brother that IS supposed to let xsane run it, xsane never try's to open the brother4 scanner that was added to /etc/sane.d/dll.conf. And doing it from its web page, I have to login, yet another instance of typing my passwd. And THAT, as George Carlin might have said in much more flowery language, sucks. Thank you.
