I got it.
My Linux (Elementary OS Freya(based on Ubuntu 14.04)) uses Sane Backends
1.0.23.
After installing Sane Backends 1.0.26 I can use brightness and contrast,
and the scan quality is much better.

The 2300C uses Sane genesys.
In OSX I can use brightness and contrast, in Linux I get "unrecognized
option brightness".
Can anyone tell me why.
