/etc/papersize was merrily a quick suggestion and after further researching, the file is provided by libpaper, pulled in by ghostscript and cups. So /etc/papersize is used for output/printing (cups) operations and not input/scanning operations. ~/.sane/xsane/xsane.rc "preset-area-name" "letter port." "preset-area-name" "letter land." Funny thing is, when scanning an area, I always scan for the image size or the largest are of the flat bed scanner, rather than by A4/Letter size. Might want to make sure the xsane frontend is able or is saving it's settings to the file.
