namaste,
this verse is perhaps linked to one philosophy called the 'chArvAka
siddhA.ntaH'. According to the propoonent, the concept of salvation
(mokshaH), rebirth etc. are rather baseless and unproven. So, the idea is to
enjoy the life to the fullest as there is NO guarantee that the burnt body
would ever return to life (rebirth, Hindu philophy in general believes in
karma theory and rebirth based on your karma of this life and the past
lives). This philophy is very materialistic. Here goes the verse...
sholkaM:
bhasmIbhUtasya dehasya punarAgamanaH kutaH |
yAvajjIvaM sukhaM jIvet R^iNaM kR^twA ghR^itaM pibet||
prose:
bhasmIbhUtasya dehasya punar AgamanaH kutaH?
yAvat JivaM sukhaM jIvet R^iNaM kR^itwA ghR^taM pibet ||
anvayaH:
bhasmIbhUtasya dehasya kutaH punarAgamanaH?
yAvat JivaM sukhaM jIvet R^iNaM kR^itwA ghr^itaM pibet||
pratipadArthaH:
bhasmIbhUtasya = of totally burnt (burnt to ashes);
dehasya = of the body;
punarAgamanaH = return;
kutaH = whence?
yAvajjIvaM = till the end of life (till death);
sukhaM = comfortably;
jIvet = to be lived;
R^inaM = take a loan, borrow;
kRitwA = being done;
ghR^itaM = ghee, by product of cow's milk;
pibet = to be drunk;
tAtparyaH:
>From where would the totally burnt body to ashes return.(Hence), till death,
(one has to)live conmfortably and has to consume ghee, even if it is taken
as a loan or borrowed.
Raghu adds:
Height of materialistic attitude. I would put it. The author clearly says
that he/she does not care nor believe that there is rebirth (punarAgamanaH,
indocates that). So, live comfortable with onely one endowed life and enjoy
the luxuries (normally, ghee is an item available in the households of well
off people) even if it is borrowed from some one else.
shubhaM bhavatu

Please do not post such long articles, especially if it has not much to
do with sanskrit, on the sanskrit list. I truncated the story but only
kept the URL.
