Please let me know if this quiz was too easy. I've originally started posting these
sanskrit quizzes once a week in the Sulekha coffeehouse to get the folks interested in
sanskrit, and used to add a few tidbits here and there to keep it lively. Here are the
answers:
1. kuryaat aahaaram praaNa sandhaaraNa-ardham.
Eat to live (what is left unsaid is - don't live to eat).
: 2. sarvE bhadraaNi paSyantu.
May all experience what is good.
This is one line from the traditional verse that goes:
sarve bhavantu sukhinah
sarve santu nirmayaah
sarve bhadraani pashyantu
maa kashchit duhkhabhahg bhavet
meaning:
May all be happy. May all be healthy. May all experience what is good and let no one
suffer.
: 3. cchaayaam anyasya kurvanti, svayam tishtanti chaatapE maha-drumaah.
Great trees provide shade to others while they themselves stand in the hot sun.
: 4. puraaNa-mityEva na saadhu sarvam
: na-chapi kavyam navamitya vadyam.
puraanam = old
iti = like that
eva = used to add emphasis (satyam-eva jayate)
na = no, not
saadhu = good
sarvam = everything
na = no, not
cha = and
api = also, too
kavyam = food offered to dead ancestors on their death anniversary - meaning as
useless as that
navam = new, novel
itya = about
vadyam = deserves to be said
It desrves to be said that everything that is old is not good, nor is everything that
is new is bad.
: 5. na vaidyah prabhur-aayushah
The doctor is not the lord of longevity.
: 6. nimittaa-bhaavE naimittika-syaapyabhaavah.
nimitta = motive, reason, cause
abhaava = absence
naimittika = whatever is produced by that motive, reason, casue
asya = whatever thing that belonged to that naimittika
api = also
abhaavah = absent
I would interpret this as:
If a person who actually puts in work is not around, the work that needs to be done
will not be around either.
: 7. Suchi manOdyasti teerthEna kim?
If your hear is pure, what need is there for pilgrimages?
: 8. lataayaam poorNa loonaayaam prasoonasva aagamam kutah?
lataayaam = creepers
poorna = full (all of it)
loonaayaam = cut off, destroyed
prasoona = flower, blooming flower
aagamam = coming
kutah = where?
If the creeper is completely detroyed (right from it's roots) how can a flower bloom?
If you mistreet your wife and completely put her off where can the happiness in your
life come from?
: 9. sarvam balavatah pathyam.
Might is right.
: 10. stithaah kshaNam pakshmasu taaDita-adharaah,
: payodhara-utsedha-nipaata-choorNitaa,
: valeeshu tasyaah skhalitaah prapedire,
: chireN naabhim prathama oda-bindavah.
: (From Kumarasambhavam by Kalidasa. This verse paints a picture of Parvati's
meditation)
: Hint: Oda-bindavah is a raindrop.
Let us first write the verse as regular prose:
prathama oda-bindavah tasyaah pakshmasu kshaNam stithaaH taaDita-adharaah
payodhara-utsedha-nipaata-choorNitaa valeeshu skhalitaah chireN naabhim prapedire
prathama oda-bindavah = the first water drop (rain drop)
tasyaah = her
pakshmasu = on eyelids
kshaNam = momentarily
stithaah = stayed
taaDita-adharaah = (then it) fell on the lips (her lips)
payodhara-utsedha-nipaata-choorNitaa = (then it) shattered on (her) hard breasts
valeeshu = (then) the triple fold on the belly (a mark of classical beauty)
skhalitaah = (it) slid in spurts (i.e., slid a little, stopped or slowed down,
gathered speed again, slowed down again…….you get the picture)
chireN = in a long time (after a long time)
naabhim = in the navel
prapedire = disappeared, vanished
The first rain drop stayed momentarily on her eyelids, dropped and shattered on her
hard breasts, and trickled down her triple fold, and after maneuvering there with
varying speeds for a long time vanished in her navel.
(The original Sanskrit is so sweet, this translation sucks:-)

Sri P.K.Ramakrishnan's answers to the quiz got bounced somehow.
Here they are.
BTW, don't you think sending your answers to the quiz directly to the
quiz master (Vis Tekumalla <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>)
instead of to sanskrit list would be better? I might be wrong.
A classic example of the value of using a standard transliteration
scheme:
Seeing 'kavyam', Sri Ramakrishnan thought it is 'kaavyam' written wrongly,
and gave a different interpretation of the suukta :-)
