This follows P.K. Ramakrishnan's recent reading of the
prahelikA, and other correspondents' comments
regarding the 'syAt' form:
The meaning of 'syAt' does not lend itself to the
suggested multiple repetitions in this context. (It
may in other contexts.)
It is often seen that the present tense forms (laT or
vartamAnakAla) of the "as" dhAtu are dropped when they
can be reasonably inferred.
Here is a recent example discussed on this listserv:
'mArmikaH ko mara.ndAnAm antareNa madhuvratam'
This sentence has an implicit 'asti', which can be
reasonably inferred. (The inference is compulsory,
because a sentence is incomplete without a finite
verb, i.e., a tiN^anta).
The sense of the vihasya-vihAya prahelikA suggests
that there ARE certain silly people whom the poetess
ridicules, not that there SHOULD or SHOULD NOT BE such
people. So there is the expectation of the present
tense (laT or vartamAna) for the existance of these
people, not the potential mood (vidhiliN^ or
vidhyartha) in the first line of the couplet. On the
other hand the second line of the couplet does expect
vidhyartha forms ("How COULD the word 'aham' BE the
dvitIya? How COULD 'aham' meaning I BE the 'dvitIyA'
meaning wife?")
I would then prosify (anvaya) the verse as follows,
with inferred additions in ():
yasya shhashhThI (cha) chaturthI cha, vihasya cha
vihAya cha (staH ##note this##), tasya aham (shabdaH
##optional, only explanatory##) katham dvitIyA syAt?
(tasya) aham katham dvitIyA syAm?
