There is some controversy coming up now and then
in Maharashtra whether the killing of Mahatma Gandhi should be called hatyaa or vadha.
If one calls it hatyaa Godse becomes an assassin. But if one calls it vadha, Godse
becomes a martyr. For example Raama killed Raavana. It is called Raavana-vadha.
(other examples Kamsa-vadha, vaali-vadha etc.) If a person kills a Braahmana it
becomes
Brahma-hatyaa.
The dictionaries say that vadha is used only in ancient Sanskrit. In later Sanskrit
hatyaa also is used.
I remember one instance where both the words are
used, probably having the two different meanings.
siMhaH prasenamavadhiit siMho jaaMbavataa
hataH . sukumaaraka maa rodiiH
tava hyeSa syamantakam..
Here the lion killed prasena in a combat. So vadha is used. Next Jambavan killed the
lion probably not in a combat but pouncing on the lion without warning. Hence the use
of hataH.
