RaavaNa as soon as he was born was said to have made a loud sqeal (ravaNa). Hence he
was called raavaNaH (ravaNaat raavaNaH). Also since he was the son of visravas his
name must be vaisraavaNaH (visravaan apatyaM pumaa.n vaisraavaNaH). Also he was known
as paulastya since he was the grandson of sage pulastya. As vis has quoted he was
called raavaNa since he hymned shiva loudly. Accordingly the derivation raavayati iti
raavaNaH must be post facto. Hence I am surprised by the MW entry " only in this
sense to explain the name of the famous Raakshasa".
