stone called "paroksha" (behind your presence).

It the golden lines of friendship of different types shine  in your absence
also, they are genuine. the idea suggested is that your friends show respect
or friendship towards you only with a view to get any advantage from you.
But behind your hack, they may blame you directly or indirectly. If they
keep the same respect or feeling of friendship in your absence also, they
could be considered as genuine friends.

Another beautiful picture:

O king Ballala, the girl of hunter tribe roaming in the city of your enemies
(who fled away to the forest to hide away from you) collected the gems
scattered (in the streets) mistaking them for the burning charcoal of
khadira wood and piles the sandal wood on them. Blowing air into it with her
mouth closing her eyes (to kindle the fire),  creates the illusion of smoke
rising by the bees attracted by the fragrance of ther expirated air.

The above is a beautiful picture of a ignorant tribal girl who has never
seen the gems. The context described presents us the picture of the valour
of the King, fearing destruction from him, his enemies abandoning their
belongings in the city scattered, had fled away to the forest. A tribal girl
from the forest, happened to be in the vacated city and found the gems
scattered in the streets red coloured like the charcoals. Mistaking them for
the burning charcoals of Khadira tree (she used to make fire in the forest),
she heaped them and putting the sandal wood on them, bending her face to
kindle the fire, she blows aire with her mouth. The bees are attracted by
the fragrance of her exhaled respirated air surround the place and created
the illusion of smoke arising out of the fire (she is kindling).

Thus the picture is complete of kindling the fire from the charcoals putting
sandal wood giving rise to a cloud of smoke.

The Ocean ---Then why do you imitate blackness?Narmada --- It is due to the 
collyrium (kajjala) of Malava women mixed with their tears.The Ocean --- What 
happened to them?Narmada --- The King of Kuntala is angry (over the Malava-s).?

This is a beautiful dialogue imagined by a poet between the Samudraraja and his 
lover Narmada in order to eulogize King of Kuntala.Ocean, the husband of all 
the rivers as the decision taken up by King of Kuntala to ?march against the 
Malava country.
To comprehend the import of the dialogue and the imagination conveyed by it, a 
common back ground under the poetic conventions is necessary.
1. The ocean is considered as the husband of all the rivers as his wives. The 
Narmada and Kalindi are the co-wives, of whom the first is white in colour and 
the later is of black colour.

2. The husband Ocean confused due to the change of colour of Narmada, mistakes 
her to be Kalindi due to the blackness of her colour. This gives rise to the 
interesting dialogue.3. Narmada also angry at being called by the name of her 
co-sister (who are co-wives envying each other and rivalling to earn the favour 
of their husband), retorts by calling him as Kumbhodbhava, the sage Agastya, 
who drank the ocean (according to the Purana-s) and is the enemy of the ocean. 
Tit for tat. This reveals the real state of thing to the reader.
4. Now each other come to realize their mistakes. ?The state of things 
reflected is that the King Kuntala is angry and decided to march against the 
Malava-s.The effect is imagined by the poet that on his taking decision to 
march against them, his enemies fled away to forests in the hills where Narmada 
orinates ?with their family and their wives were shedding tears due to the 
difficulties while passing through the forest regions which made the river and 
the water of the Narmada is made black coloured by the corryllium mixed with 
the tears flowing into the river. This is the real cause for the confusion of 
the Ocean mistaking her for Kalindi who is naturally black and a love quarrel 
between the husband and the wife is presented by the poet on account of this.

Sorry about the long gap in the lessons as I got a bit busy. I will try to
keep the lessons going at a steady pace from now on.

In the last lesson, we showed how sanskrit alphabet has a nice logical
ordering of its letters based on 'aasya prayatnaM' i.e., utterance.

In this lesson, I will introduce a couple more sanskrit grammatical terms
and complete the first chapter
'saMj~naa prakaraNam' of LSK.

*aN-udit-savarNasya cha-apratyayaH

*ityukte,
apratyayaH aN, udit cha tasya savarNasya saMj~naa syaat
????????? ??, udit ? ???? ???????? ?????? ??????

*The letter 'a', if used without a pratyaya i.e., suffix, is an abbreviation
for all the savarNa letters of 'a'.
Similarly with 'i', 'u'
Similarly with uditaH, which means ku, chu, Tu, tu and pu

For instance, 'a' stands for the 18 savarNas of 'a' i.e.,
{hrasva, dIrgha, pluta} x {udAtta, anudAtta, svarita} x {anunAsika,
ananunAsika} = 18 tulya-aasya prayatna forms of 'a'.
Similarly, 'i' ? and 'u' ? have 18 forms.
R^i (?) and L^i has 30 forms. (What are those? I don't know).

ech (??) i.e., e, ai, o, au have 12 forms because they don't have the hrasva
form:
{dIrgha, pluta) x {udAtta, anudAtta, svarita} x {anunAsika, ananunAsika} =
12.

*paraH saMnikarShaH saMhitaa*

varNaanaaM atishayitaH sannidhiH samhitaa-saMj~naH syaat |
The term 'samhitaa' denotes the extreme proximity of two akSharas (without
anything else in between). For example,
ka = k + 'a'

*halo.anantaraaH saMyogaH *
ach-bhiH avyavahitaa halaH saMyoga-saMj~naaH syuH |

The appearance of two hal varNas (i.e., consonants) unintervened by an 'ach'
i.e., vowel is called saMyoga.
Such a consonant pair is called saMyuktaakSharaH
rakta = r + a + k + t + a
Here, 'ra' is a samhitaakShara,
'kt' is samyuktaakShara

Finally,

*sup-ti~NantaM padam

*subantaM ti~NantaM cha pada-saMj~naM syaat |
Sanskrit has a precise definition for what is a valid 'word' or padam.
a word that either ends in 'sup' pratyayaaH (suffixes) or 'ti~N' pratyayaaH
is called a padam and can stand by itself in a sentence.
To a first level of approximation we can say that
verbs end in 'ti~N' e.g., bhavati, nayati etc.
non-verbs end in 'sup' e.g., raamaH, kR^IShNena etc.
raam is not a valid 'padam' because it does not have the 'sup' suffix.
What in the world are 'sup' and 'ti~N'?
That's a major topic that we'll come to later, but I'll satisfy your
curiosity a little by saying
sup means, 'su au jas am au shas Taa bhyaaM bhis ~ne bhyaam bhyas ....."
raama + su = raamaH (based on some sandhi rule we'll get to later).
raama + jas = raamaaH
raama + am = raamam (dvitiiyaa vibhakti form of raama SabdaH).

A humorous reference to sup pratyayaaH occurs in an old telugu movie called
Maayaabazaar.
ghaTotkacha's court preceptor (actor RamaNaa Reddi) tries to make all the
raakShasa disciples recite the sup pratyayaaH
by asking them to repeat after him: 'su au jas .... Taa bhyaaM bhis ~ne
bhyaaM bhyas'
But the raakShasa folk, whose tongues are too thick and blunt, can't utter
the samyuktaakSharas properly.
They say 'Taa bayaam bis e bayaam bayas'
The preceptor gets vexed and utters 'Siva Sivaa', which the disciples also
repeat religiously after him :-)
