*Position:* Aurora Database Administrator / MySQL DBA *Location:* Lexington, KY *Duration:* 6 month contract *Job Description**:* Amazon Aurora is a MySQL-compatible relational database engine built from MySQL version 5.6.10a. The Aurora DBA will possess strong MySQL 5.6 database maintenance, administration, operations, and design experience and skills. The Aurora DBA will be responsible for ensuring the performance, availability, and security of clusters of Aurora instances within AWS. This position also requires strong experience with AWS RDS and working with the tools and processes inherent to a continuous delivery environment. The successful candidate will be a seasoned database technologist with extensive knowledge and experience in supporting mission critical, scalable systems. This role requires good communication skills, working with members of other IT teams and applications’ business stakeholders. Successful candidates will have a comprehensive knowledge and experience with industry best practices in MySQL database maintenance, administration, and design; and a track record of providing high-quality, reliable service in a timely and effective manner. *Responsibilities* Ø Provision Aurora instances. Ø Maintain configuration of Aurora instances including replication setup, parameter settings and identification of appropriate instance types/sizes. Ø Ensure performance, security, and availability of Aurora databases. Ø Recommend and implement performance tuning solutions, such as indexing and partitioning Ø Handle common database procedures, such as upgrade, backup, recovery, and migration. Ø Profile server resource usage, optimize and tweak as necessary. Ø Monitor production Aurora database(s) in AWS RDS, identifying emerging data-related issues, including system-level and SQL-level performance and database storage utilization, performing tuning and initiating proactive mitigating measures as appropriate; provides data-related incident response; and coordinates with others as necessary. Ø Maintain Aurora database monitoring tools and alerts and develops new monitoring and alerting capabilities as needed. Ø Respond quickly and effectively to production issues, troubleshooting solutions, and taking responsibility for seeing those solutions through resolution. Identify root cause and corrective actions for highly complex availability, capacity, security, performance, and quality issues affecting the database. Ø *Review/deploy data-manipulation (DML) and data-definition (DDL) changes as needed.* o Perform table maintenance as needed for business requirements. o Perform data cleanup in staging and production environments upon request. o Perform access management for authorized users. o Review and execute new queries as needed to support business requirements. Ø Perform point-in-time database restorations as needed. Ø Stay current and continually increase expertise in database design, maintenance, administration, monitoring, tuning, continuous deployment, and AWS technologies. Skills and Qualifications Ø Strong proficiency in supporting, administrating, troubleshooting, and tuning of MySQL databases with a demonstrated thorough knowledge of MySQL 5.6 Ø Experience with the various MySQL utilities Ø Strong knowledge of the innoDB storage engine and its affect/limits Ø *Solid skills in performance tuning* o Index creation and management o Partitioning creation and management Ø In-depth knowledge and experience with various database objects creation and maintenance Ø Skills and experience in access management Ø Working knowledge of the various logs and their usage Ø Working knowledge and experience using monitoring tools and instrumentation to proactively ensure optimum platform and application performance. Ø Experience in replication configuration and resolving replica database performance anomalies Ø Thorough knowledge of the various MySQL instance parameters governing overall database performance Ø Working knowledge of MySQL internals (incl. locking, transaction consistency, and recovery paths) Ø Thorough knowledge in identifying and resolving poorly executing SQL.
