Good analytic skills. Ability to look at a complex problem and develop an understanding and assessment based on quantitative and demonstrable (demonstrate) conditions and/or examples. Ability to see complex issues and software and from it develop meaningful approaches to resolution of various issues and challenges. It is beneficial if the candidate has experience using Java analytic tools including a. Profilers b. Heap Analyzers c. Core Analyzers d. Verbose Garbage Collection 2. Assess and evaluate alternatives to determine which course of action provides the best optimization of: a. Results i. Software Quality ii. Software Performance b. Time c. Objects The project has important constraints so making the right choices while balancing all the different dimensions of concern is critical. What is worth doing? What needs to be done? What can be deferred? Etc. 3. Quick learner. Pick up an existing code base and be able to make additions and changes within tight constraints of time and objectives. The candidate must be good at learning a complex code base and finding creative and workable solutions to challenging technical problems. The technology stack is fairly standard including: a. Java 1.4.X b. Some JMS c. Some EJB 2 d. DOM and custom XML parsing e. Rational Software Architect f. Source Control is PVCS A good candidate will be able to add and modify the existing code base in a way that isolates issues and changes. The changes should provide for improvement not just in the functionality but also the structure of the application. Experience with refactoring a system is beneficial. Meaningful background doing maintenance work on existing production systems is a good background for some of aspects of this project. Candidate is comfortable with Java syntax and methods. Is familiar with new JDKs in terms of where the language is going so that their coding reflects new capabilities even if they are not available today. Other secondary toolkits that have been used in isolated circumstances include: JAXB 1 and Checkstyle. 4. Candidate has experience with testing and documentation. All the changes require development of unit tests and functional tests. The current system has a comprehensive lack of these critical aspects. It is critical to have pieces to test to validate the project did not change business rules. Examples include: a. JUnit tests b. Mock functional transactions testing various business scenarios c. Experience with Emperix for UI scripting d. Mock endpoint development e. Etc 5. Nice to have includes: a. Web Sphere 6.1 background b. MQ Series background At this point a lot of the analysis has been completed. There is a fairly clear list of the issues that has been prioritized. Not all of the issues are well understood. One by one the candidate will have to gain an understanding, develop some alternatives with the team, and then implement the preferred solution.
