This VMware Engineer is viewed as the technical expert that leads server infrastructure projects requiring specialized knowledge. Under moderate supervision the associate is responsible for understanding both the business and technical requirements for new products that will be engineered and implemented. This position is responsible for the design, implementation and support of server infrastructure. Also responsible for the coordination of moves, adds and changes for servers. Responsible for the provisioning of complex server infrastructures. Additionally, responsible for the update of management information systems, including asset management, time tracking and other systems. This position is also required to mentor junior level engineers as well as provide third level support for complex issues, problems or projects. Duties & Responsibilities Responsible for working with the different business units to develop the engineering design to support the business and operational requirements for either new systems or enhancements to existing systems. Interacts in a professional manor during the project engagement. 2. Responsible for the engineering design to meet the business and operational objectives for business continuity solutions. 3. Responsible for defining standard engineering designs, templates, processes, and procedures for implementing projects that follow existing architectures. 4. Analyzes system performance, modifying parameters to improve throughput and effectively utilize system resources. Monitors resource usage, making required adjustments. 5. With administrative direction and assistance from management, leads the evaluation and selection of tools. Sets up product demos, and objectively evaluates tools. Coordinates the collection of feedback from other evaluators. Summarizes the input, makes cost conscience tool recommendations. May be responsible for the effective deployment of tools in the group. 6. Responsible for accurately estimating and planning activities within the domain to provide the necessary input into the project managers for developing an end to end plan under the direction of the manager or consultant. 7. Expert understanding of data communication protocols focusing on TCP/IP. Strong understanding of server platforms in a corporate infrastructure. Strong understanding of server security practices and tools. In depth experience with hardware and software based server monitoring tools. Senior Level RedHat Linux Skills including: LVM SAN and raw disk presentation Process management Networking configuration Performance & tuning Job scheduling and cron Log management & rotation Building servers from scratch System patching Server sizing Strong shell scripting skills: Able to write significant shells scripts (100-1000 lines) from scratch Enhance existing shell scripts Debug scripting problems Mastery of sh and bash, exposure to ksh Deep conceptual understanding of networking technologies including: TCP/IP NFS CIFS/Samba Experience is high scale data center (>500 servers) environments Comfortable with hybrid physical/virtual environments In addition to the skills listed above, the ideal candidate will also posses knowledge and experience in the following: Comparable AIX skills (including VIOs) Comparable SLES skills Comparable Solaris skills MTA (sendmail and postfix) configuration High level scripting/programming skills (perl, python, C, Java) IBM GPFS configuration and support Oracle ASM configuratiaon and support Sybase raw disk configuration and support Tivoli storage manager exposure Mono backup exposure Tivoli Storage Manager exposure eGenera exposure Bachelors Degree in a related technical field, or similar discipline. Good written and verbal communications skills Demonstrated competency in the use of project management tools and methodologies Ability to manage concurrent projects to plan. Must have experience functioning as a lead on projects. Demonstrated ability to execute and perform timely follow-up to ensure customer satisfaction Ability to instill quality in every aspect of the job function. VMWare certification(s) a plus!!
