Role Description
To act as a senior project engineer for the design, validation and overall
delivery of large-scale, complex and unique customer network projects. This
role combines absolute design expertise (you are the ultimate design
authority) with hands-on working (testing, POC and some implementation) and
some internal and external client interaction. The role also requires the
candidate to contribute technically to the strategic direction of the team
and to act as the lead technical interface between the client and the rest
of the business during the post Sales and project delivery phase.
Main areas of responsibility
- Design, testing (including POC and feasibility testing), validation and
implementation of customer engineering projects based on the agreed scope
and requirements. This includes being the design authority for complex and
unique client solutions while ensuring the project is consistent with
overall strategies, architecture and policies. Our clients are often early
adopters of technologies and solutions and hence the candidate may be
required to also evaluate vendor product offerings.
- End-to-end ownership of designs, inclusive of customer specific
(bespoke) components as well as understanding requirements on shared
infrastructure, client provisioning, and the overall business model. This
includes direct responsibility for specification and creation of Engineering
Change Requests and being a Point of Escalation (ie. 4th level support) for
the solution lifetime.
- To interact with Customer technical representatives (as well as
internal groups Technical Sales and Customer Solutions groups) to ensure
that the requirements are understood and the delivered solution is
appropriate. This includes developing an in-depth understanding of the
customer�s application as well as ensuring that all requirements (SLA,
resiliency, redundancy, convergence tolerance, security, etc) are met by the
design.
- Ownership, creation and delivery of all project documentation for the
detailed design, validation and support consistent with the established
templates, or customized as required.
- To provide internal feedback to, and ensure acceptance from, various
groups for capacity planning, infrastructure requirements, product
development, QA/3rd Level, Operations, etc for all design and deployment
dependencies.
- Manage handover of solutions to operations and customer service
including client pilot programs and/or application and cutover testing and
support. This typically includes providing technical direction and
leadership to a cross-departmental project team delivering the overall
design.
- To provide continued improvement, efficiency and cost savings through
standardization, consolidation and cross-departmental harmony, wherever
possible. This includes working closely with the global engineering teams
to contribute to the capabilities and strategy of the standard product set
and design policies.
- Where a project is an early adopter of a technology and/or solutions,
provide evaluation, verification and design for vendor and technology
product offerings.
- Provide ongoing lifecycle support for key customers/providers to plan
for future requirements, ensure overall customer satisfaction and help the
business in revenue generation.
- To provide leadership for work teams or task forces, particularly on
emerging areas within specialised functional or process area.
Key Skills
- Qualified to degree level or equivalent in engineering or computers
sciences and ideally to CCIE or equivalent.
- Minimum of seven years experience, responsible for the design,
engineering and implementation of large global, wide area customer network
infrastructure as well as delivery of Customer connectivity solutions.
Candidate must demonstrate that they have designed solutions from scratch
and have had significant experience in having to correspond, present to and
interact with external clients.
- Recognized specialist for several key financial industry technologies
especially multicast, low latency, BGP route manipulation, application
integration.
- In depth and strong working knowledge of TCP/IP principles, Cisco
routers and switch networks and network protocols/architecture including
BGP, OSPF, CoS/QoS, multicast, NAT solutions, MPLS/MPLS VPNs, IPSec, frame
relay, metro ethernet, ATM, leased line, POS and switched architectures;
note the first five technology features are mandatory
- Thorough understanding of a network provider organisation coupled with
proven experience and track record (minimum 2 years) in designing and
implementing networking solutions to customers in the Financial Services or
Banking Industry. This is critical to the role to enable authoritative
interaction with client counterparts to ensure successful
design/integration, application delivery and full validation
- Thorough understanding of carrier service providers.
- Up to date and hands on experience with a range of vendors� equipment,
in particular Cisco routers and switches, Netscreen firewalls, various
network analysis and traffic generation tools and network management
systems. This is key, as the candidate will be required to build and conduct
various lab tests (including feasibility and POC tests), to verify and
certify their designs.
- Excellent communication skills and hence able to communicate clearly
and concisely, verbally and in writing, at all levels to senior management,
engineering, operations, sales support and external customers including high
quality designs, presentations and project support documentation.
- Self- motivated, goal oriented and able to demonstrate initiative.
- Ability to devise creative ideas in solving problems, using new
technologies appropriately.
- Ability to work with disparate groups of people and extract
information.
- Ability to work under pressure and deliver projects to tight deadlines.
- Power or advanced user of the following Microsoft applications; Word,
Excel, Powerpoint .
- Other desirable skills include knowledge of Juniper and Nortel Networks
(BAY) routers, Nortel Passport switches, UNIX, VoIP, and programming skills.
